Old and New

 I can't claim to have taken the original of this image as it most likely pre-dates both of my parents being born ... 

Our camera club's calendar this Christmas will be based on old photographs of the village with more recent versions of the same view.  I have volunteered to try to work with this one of Southam Street taken, I think, in the 1920s.  I have tidied up some of the damage to the original and bumped up the contrast to make it easier to get some pointers on framing the up to date version.

So far I'm just aiming to get an idea of what time of day and year and have a look around for the right place to stand.  That could be 'interesting' as Southam Street is the main road through the village and not far behind the photographer is the T-junction in the middle of the village.   Rough cut google maps version in the extra.  

Judging by the shadow of the tree to the right it was mid morning, and as I can't see chimney smoke later than April?   The street light and the gable end behind it look like a good starting point .... 

One of the speakers at the club was explaining how the early photographers would encourage children to play (pose as if playing?) in the shot which increased their chances of selling a few post cards to cover the cost of the trip to the village.  One has to wonder how that might be seen today?
