U-Bahn München: 87/100 St.-Quirin-Platz

Munich Underground: 87/100 St.-Quirin-Platz

Today's entry in my strictly alphabetical Munich underground series is architecturally unique in Munich's underground network. St.-Quirin-Platz underground station features a huge glass dome, that opens the station to a small park outside. The eye-like copula spans the platform, as well as the the ticket and entrance hall at the ground level above. The visible augercast pile walls and the aluminium ceiling are the usual features of the stations of the southern U1 extension opened in November 1997.

The station is served by the trains of the dark green U1 line and is the next-to-last stop along that line to the south, just before Mangfallplatz station.

In the early plans of the southern U1 extension this station was not included, but the distance of 1.5 kilometres between Wettersteinplatz station to the north and Mangfallsplatz station to the south was viewed as to wide, and so a stop at St.-Quirin Platz near Mittlerer Ring urban expressway was added.

This station was a real design treat. The next station - not so much.

"We've left everything behind, but we found ourselves and each other. Tomorrow we may have to fight again, but for now we ride the train to the end of the line, and then we'll jump." - (Divergent)
