U-Bahn München: 53/100 Mangfallplatz

Munich underground: 53/100 Mangfallplatz

Mangfallplatz underground station was opened as part of the southern extension of the U1 line, together with e.g. Candidplatz station, in 1997, and since then is the southern terminus of the line. There was a plan to further extend the line, but these plans have been postponed indefintely.

Similarly to the station at Gern, the walls had to be built oblique, so that traffic at the surface had always enough room during the construction of the station. The walls are not faced and show exposed concrete, which make the red station signs shine out even more. The aluminium ceiling bounces back the light of the lamps, so the entirety of the station is very well-lit.

The painting on the northern wall hints at water, which connects to the station name: the Mangfall river and valley is where Munich obtains a big portion of its drinking water from.

Spoiler: the next underground station in the series will be a real treat - keyword 2001: A Space Odyssey.
