U-Bahn München: 52/100 Maillingerstraße

Munich underground: 52/100 Maillingerstraße

Maillingerstraße underground station was opened in 1983 together with the neighbouring stops along the U1 line at Stiglmaierplatz and Rotkreuzplatz. The design evolved significantly from the stations, that were opened in 1980, like Hohenzollernplatz or Josephsplatz, but still was a child of its time: the vertical brown stripes on the wall with changing stroke width would hardly be considert pretty today. There are similarities to the so called Blumenlinie ("Flower line") stations like Holzapfelkreuth, but those were painted in more appealing colours.

After Maillingerstraße station and the other stations opened in 1983, design got more into the focus of the planners of the U-Bahn, so the early 80's stations can be considered a starting point. For example, Gern underground station (further north along the U1 line) is a result of this new thinking.

Originally, the central pillars were covered in brown tiles, but when the first tiles fell off, the pillars were faced with brighter aluminium panels in 2008.

The design is subpar, so a moving train had to do the trick.
