One cup .....

...  does not make a holy well said Himself, but I think he's wrong - that's the definite sign - can you spot it?
A day out in the field today  - mainly in mist and mizzle, all very atmospheric and the terrain  challenging. We met our pals for coffee  and (warm) Danish pastries first;  thus fuelled we headed off to the Beara Peninsula, the Sheep's Head's bigger and more rugged sister. Three and a half holy wells, a stone row, a stone circle, a clootie tree,  a raised ring fort and a ruined church in the most spectacular setting later, I am now covered in bog, coffee, peaty water and the old jeans are even more ripped!  We even met a travelling green grocer and were directed to the second holy well (see extra) by Nan. At one point, on some torturous windy road we all shrieked  'grotto' and without a flicker Robert pulled in so we could leap out and admire the BVM -  how brilliant to have friends as mad enthused as we are! We popped into the church in Castletownbere and were amazed at the ultra violet light illuminating the altar and all the statues swathes in purple gauze, presumably like this throughout Lent.

The main pic is of St Mochuda's Well which it wasn't where we thought it was. The other extra is of a ballaun, a manmade basin carved into natural rock, and is also classified as a holy well. Can you see all the coins left as offerings and the object to the left is its cover.  The other pix shows the terrain and Himself looking at the first site, sadly no well discovered there; and an offering on the clootie tree.  Great day.

Last night's Film The Idol, also excellent and based on a true story of one young Palestinian's attempt to win Arab Idol - first he had to escape Palestine and get into Egypt. Recommended.
