Dumbarton Buildings - The Rialto

The Rialto (originally called the Pavillion) - Dumbarton's picture hoose.

Or was.

It's a bingo hall now, more's the pity.

Treasured memories of this place for all sorts of reasons; I love the genre of the cinema, but now thoroughly detest the modernity of it all, what with yapping, phone gazing, sweetie rustling and just general bad manners.

Amazingly at one point Dumbarton had four cinemas, but I only ever recall going to the Rialto, including a memorable trip to see Jaws. Yon bit where a pale corpse, missing an eye, floats up into the dark water, illuminated by a torch will haunt me forever!

A wee bit of history - The Pavilion was opened in 1914 by Joseph Wingate and then sold 1924. It was again sold to SCVT in 1927, and renamed Rialto.

Later sold to CAC, and rebuilt for cine-bingo (two small cinemas upstairs in original balcony area) in 1981. The Cinemas closed in 1989, and a brief reopening in 1993 was unsuccessful.

Carlton Bingo continues downstairs to this day.
