This is a detail from Raeburn's superb portrait of the fiddler Neil Gow , which hangs in the drawing room of Bute House.

Last night's dinner for the Catalan University delegation was held in the Raeburn Room at Edinburgh University's Old College which houses half a dozen pictures of enlightenment academics by the same artist.

I am lucky to have had the chance to see so many of his wonderful images in the space of less than 24 hours.
