Good choice, Allesandro!

Alessandro Volta was born in Como in 1745.   His family intended him for the Church, but instead he took off and invented the voltaic pile - and (not entirely single-handedly) changed the world!

He was accused by family and more widely of having "left the church", becoming a beyond the pale atheist.   Frustrated by all that, he published a strong declaration of faith in the Catholic Church.

I can't imagine he would have been a happy priest - but as a scientist he seemed very rounded and successful.   He lived to be 82 anyway and died in Como.

I once sailed up the Lake to visit Como Cathedral - it was closed.   I enjoyed seeing instead Volta's Fountain - a tribute to his invention of the  battery.
