Odyssey

Collage and acrylic paint. The cut paper is from Summit, a magazine about Hawaii. The center of the flower is from a photograph of the acclaimed poet W.S. Merwin, holding fruit from the palm trees he planted with devotion on the wasteland of a used-up sugar plantation on Maui. The blue paint represents the Pacific Ocean surrounding the Hawaiian Islands as well as Merwin's dedication to the conservation of water.

water feeds the land
from the flower comes the fruit
then we feast on poems
