Foucault's Pendulum

Knowing today would be busy packing, conference and then  travel home, I had my eye on this blip since Thursday.   The hotel is part of the Weston Building and Manchester Conference Centre.  Not that our conference was there it was in what had been GMEX and is now Manchester Central.

Having been owned and operated by Umist (University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology)  it isn't too surprising that the lower foyer contains one of the country's few Foucault's Pendulums. (about 10)

Foucault's Pendulums were a device used by Louis Foucault in the mid 1800s to demonstrate that the earth is spinning rather than stationary.  The pendulum moves its axis a little every hour until it has eventually completed a circle.  I suspect his example is now more a novelty rather than a demonstration.
