Rissa's World

History of Hong Kong with the Parents

Today was the first full day that we had and boy did we make the most of it. We started off at my favorite breakfast place, The Flying Pan, and then started a privet tour with a local. First we went to Sheung Wan, an area that use to be Hong Kong's old Chinese quarter, and visited the dried seafood market and Man (god of literature) Mo (god of military) Temple. Next we headed over to Sham Shui Po to see the local wet markets (where they sell very, very fresh fish, you know the kind that is still flopping around......) and the Tin Hau Temple (dedicated to a fisher folk goddess). The last stop on the tour was Kowloon walled city park. It was originally a Qing Dynasty military base but later became a massive squatter area with no government control or rule of law due to its odd political situation, at its peak there was at least 33,000 residents inside the mini walled city! Eventually it was brought down and turned into a park.

After the tour ended we headed over to the Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden where the above picture was taken. Since it was almost closing time we were able to take some fantastic photos without the crowds. And all that was only day one....
