Spent the day at Tarn Hows with the NT South Lakes Conservation Group. Tarn Hows is grazed by a herd of Belted Galloway cows or Belties for short. The cows do a great job of keeping the undergrowth under control. Unfortunately they seem to have a liking for Rowan bark and have damaged two trees as a consequence. Todays task was to build protective cages around the trees to prevent further damage. With only four volunteers there was a lot to do and I am now truly exhausted. I banged in fence poles, nailed in rails, sawed off excess wood and finally tried to fit the stock fencing as best we could. The terrain was really testing - it sloped and was full of rocks and tree roots. One of the outputs of everyone's hard work is shown in extras. Thankfully the weather held fair for the most part though I did drive home through a brief snow and hail storm.
