Sir John Barrow Monument

Across in the Lakes for the British Orienteering Championships. Staying in Ulverston we were directed on a local walk that was delightful on a sunny afternoon.

It took in a riverside, fields, bluebell woods and finally this monument. This replica of an earlier Eddystone Lighthouse was built in 1850 as a memorial to Sir John Barrow, who was born in Ulverston, a navigator and explorer who helped map much of the Arctic. From here there was some fine views of the Langdales, Coniston Old Man, Helvellyn and across to Ingleborough.

A great start to the weekend.
