Small Copper

Back to a normal image for today.

This is the earliest in the year that I have ever seen one of these and the first time ever at this location (Kinghorn Loch, Fife).

Small coppers (Lycaena phlaeas) overwinter as larvae and pupate through April, emerging in the first week of May (in Scotland). I usually only encounter individuals of the next generation in August/September.
