Red Tail Hawk

He was keeping an eye on everything from the curved perch of the streetlight.

I found a huge mound of dirt in the garden this morning, well hidden under the runaway alstroemeria. In all these gardening years, we've never had gophers, so I'm not sure what gopher mounds really look like, but I just googled some images that don't match what we have. This is an area at least 4x4 feet, with fresh dirt from 8 to 10 inches deep, and no holes or tunnels that I can feel by prodding with a stick. All of the dirt is camouflaged by the alstroemeria; it's as if the creature very carefully chose a place where we couldn't see the damage. Unless I remove all the plants, I can't see what's going on. A mystery!
