One step beyond

I took this picture on a walk to see my podiatrist in Ladbroke Grove. The light reflection on the road looks a bit like a footprint.

My foot expert introduced me to a new word:

Proprioception

.. no I hadn't heard of it before either

Proprioception is our sixth sense and to paraphrase it's a non-conceptual and usually unconscious sense that gives us information regarding the location, movement and posture of our bodies in physical space. This information is gained by sensory receptors found all over our bodies and helps us to keep and maintain what is known as our body schema. Our body schema is our unconscious map of our bodies, almost like a plan inside our heads that tells us where our different body parts are.

When we move, sensors around our body makes global adjustments to a wide number of muscle systems. We also take in information about the new space we occupy.

Without Propriaception balance would be impossible.

Interesting eh!
