Black-headed Cardinal beetle

Similar to the commoner Red-Headed Cardinal beetle Pyrochroa serraticornis, the Black-Headed Cardinal beetle Pyrochroa coccinea is larger and a deeper blood red. Usually seen in May and June (often just sitting on vegetation) it is common in the south becoming rarer further north. The larvae predate on other insects under loose tree bark.
I always get excited when I see these fiery beauties, even if it was raining!
