...raj rage with the fab BBC series 'Indian Summer' and 'Viceroy's House' about the last decades of the British in India and their preparations to leave.

This book stood out from the crowd in the State Library's annual sale of 'well read much loved and no longer on the shelves' books. The author was a child of the Raj her mother and maternal grandmother born in Calcutta, her father posted to to the North West Frontier.
A memoir spiced with recipes in chapters named for tiffins and picnics tea times spices and pickles and gymkhana refreshments! it is a treat.
And expect the unexpected... 'Sardine curry puffs' and 'chapattis with butter and marmalade'.

Indian Summer was filmed on Penang Hill on the island of my birth.
Apparently it suited very well the atmosphere of the summer hill stations of northern India where  British civil servants retired to and governed the country during the sweltering summer season.
The Simla Club was the old Crag Hotel one of the hotels owned by the Sarkie Brothers and a poor relation to Singapore's Raffles and Yangon's The Strand...but probably not for much longer!
