Friend Ian Weichardt kindly extended an invitation to see for free the understudy performance of The Miser at the Garrick Theatre. I'm not normally fond of farce but Moliere is an exception. We laughed heartily throughout.

Most understudies have to learn two or three roles just incase a lead actor is unwell. Today all the understudies got to play lead roles and (much to our surprise) the lead actors played the minor roles.

So comedian Lee Mack sweeps the stage and Griff Rhys Jones turns up at the very end as a Spaniard.

Ian played Cleante with great enthusiasm and energy.

Beforehand we had lunch in Gaby's (where the waitress kindly posed). The Jewish deli is one of the oldest businesses in Theatreland and a Soho institution. It's cheap and cheerful and does the best hummus and felafel sandwich you will find anywhere.
