The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland took place in Edinburgh without two of the invited commissioners (delegates) from overseas churches. They were denied the opportunity to take part due to difficulties obtaining visas to visit the UK.

The Moderator (chairman) of the Assembly intimated that places would be reserved for them throughout the week as a mark of solidarity. The two empty places would remain as a reminder of their absence, yet presence.
