Surprise visitor!

Stumbling around in the half light at 4.40 this morning when I got up to look in the moth trap. I noticed this beautiful male Stag beetle Lucanus cervus sitting half way up the wall! Needless to say I quickly netted him, so we could have a photo shoot!
The stag beetle is listed as endangered, but seems to do rather well round here in West Sussex, as i see them most years, but this is the first time one has ever come to my moth trap.
The male beetles (like this one), range in size from 35 - 50 mm and sport an impressive pair of 'antlers' which are actually over-sized  mandibles used for courtship display.
despite looking quite fearsome they are actually harmless and a real joy to have in my garden.
