Tequila Sunrise

When I awoke at 5:30 and saw clear skies I knew we were in for a good one. After some early morning photography I managed to get back to sleep awhile and then got up to reserve a poolside lounger. And lounge we did. Though I squeezed in a step along to the maritime museum - maist interesting - I didn't realise the Spanish had sailed up here only 50 years after Columbus first crossed the Atlantic. Indeed. And the world's first offshore oil rig was off Santa Barbara in 1896!
Started reading Paul Beatty's The Sellout. A terrific satire on race, it was somehow apt that we lunched at Sambo's just along the front. A great place - none of that eggs benedict - corned beef hash benedict. Later, a first - a paddle in the Pacific.
And after an outing to eat, we stumbled over a place with an eight piece trad jazz band stomping away. Well, we just had to press our way in. And even managed a bit of toe to toe dancing. And at the end, as the band leader was announcing the last number I detected a Scottish brogue. Indeed! So of course we fell into conversation - he was Alex Marshall, one time Edinburgh resident and player with Charlie McNair who we used to regularly watch back in the early seventies! It's enough to make you remark on how small the world is.....
