Railway Children

Grace and I arrived in Oxenhope for the Railway Children walk this morning despite the grey skies and drizzle.
We had a bit of a mix up and our walking partner, Wilsden Walker, wasn't there - my fault - after a quick look at Oxenhope station which was just opening for the day and then we set off into Haworth.

The well worn path, part of the Railway Children trail, follows the line of the railway tracks and the River Worth into Haworth.
Little bridges cross the river back and forth as you go and with lots of meadow flowers at this time of year it was most attractive. As we got to the bottom of Brow Road and started to cross the railway two engines were firing up ready for the first train at 10.00am. It was very noisy and atmospheric. I know nothing of steam trains but noticed one was a US engine and one British.

We continued up the Main Street and found that many places were closed or just starting to open. No matter we found the cafe we wanted was open and had a coffee (hot chocolate for Grace) and had a well received breakfast sandwich. A few more shops were open to pop into on the way back down and then we retraced out steps.

We saw (and heard) the train travelling on to Oxenhope as we walked but could only see it through a small gap in the trees. A bit of engine shuffling was going on as we approached the station so we went up to the side of the tracks. The driver here turned and wave to us.

Think we really felt that we had been the railway children today and were surprised we had walked 5 miles. We'll do the full walk with you S another day.
