Wonderful Winter Walk

Not a cloud in the sky, so a wonderful walk by the Clutha River today.  We parked in Kane Road, and walked up the true right of the River to our various lunch spots.  I took this photo as the 16 of us were heading back to the cars which were parked to the right of the cliff face in the distance.  We walked through hoar frost to begin with, then into the lovely sunshine.  Because of modern technology I can give you the exact distance we walked i.e. 11.4 k's.  We had a nice cuppa at the local Luggate Cafe before heading for home.  The extra is Walking through the Hoar Frost

Year 1924

The All Black Rugby Team traveled to the UK.  Because they scored 838 points and conceeded just 116, they became know as 'The Invincibles'.  Fullback George Nepia was the star of the team.

Olympic Games in Paris.  Again we had a team of 4 participants.  Arthur Porrit won the bronze medal in the 100 metres dash.  This race was dramatised in the film 'Chariots of Fire', a 1981 British historical drama.  Arthur went on to become the NZ Governor General from 1967 to 1972.

The Night Limited Express between Auckland and Wellington commenced.  I have travelled on that train many times in the 1960's.  You had to make sure that the carriage windows were closed, especially when going through tunnels.  You will never forget the cuppa tea available at the Taumarunui Railway Station,.  The Night Limited Express ran until 1971.
