Heartbreak House Set ...

... at Hartford Stage in Hartford CT. Heartbreak House is a play by George Bernard Shaw set in England just before the outbreak of World War I in 1914. First produced in 1920, it brings together ten or so somewhat bizarre English characters, who are visiting in a country house, marvelously displayed on the stage. The personal interactions indirectly reflect the war's themes and events--not a easy play to follow, but it was beautifully acted. One of the central characters, Hesione Hushabye, is played by the daughter of a friend of Marylee from her time at Mount Holyoke in the 1960s who lives in England; she didn't come to the reunion but through it they made contact for the first time in 50 years--and we are going to meet her soon on our upcoming trip to Europe.
