The Kelpies

A visit today to seek different blips in the area of Falkirk.   Firstly, the magnificent pieces of public art known as The Kelpies - standing by the canal and measuring 30 metres in height.    A Kelpie, by the way, is a mythical water horse.

And also to the Falkirk Wheel - a rotating boat lift that was a millennium project to restore the connection between the Union Canal (to Edinburgh) and the Forth-Clyde Canal.    When the canal was more or less abandoned in the 1930's, the locks that made that connection were filled in and built on.     With the return to the water, another solution was found - an amazing piece of engineering that will lift or lower tons of boat and passengers through a height of 25 metres, from one canal system to another.

Extras:    Both Kelpies together; shots of the rotating boat lift.
