At risk

This is Melrose Liquors, a drive-through liquor store that was built in the post-World War II boom. It's one of a few examples of Googie architecture in Phoenix. Behind it (and behind me in this photo) is a luxury apartment complex under construction. The apartment's owner wants to demolish this classic building to put in a park.

Preservationists want to keep the building, which was built in 1957 and is one of the city's oldest continuously operating drive-through liquor stores.
