Sharing the road

I still don't quite understand the logic that compels cyclist to share road space with some of the biggest vehicles on the city's roads - buses. But I suppose it is a start. Provision for cycling still has a long way to go in this country. Like the cycle lanes that disappear as soon as you approach a complicated junction. Fine when it's a straightforward bit of road, but just when you really need it, the cycle lane vanishes! I wonder what it would cost to re-design the city's roads with cyclists and pedestrians at the forefront of the process, rather than cars and buses? What would it look like? How would it work? What about completely separated cycle lanes, instead of having to make do with the gutter? Obviously that would reduce the road width, so the car lobby would bleat. But if it got more people cycling wouldn't it be worth it? Joined up government - fitter healthier people, less pollution, saving money on fuel., etc.
