Flower border

Here's the helenium from 22 June in context, with lathryus odorata behind. Just visible to the right are perovskia and fennel. The clematis on the obelisk is bearing its flowers higher up, out of shot. You'd think the colours here wouldn't really go together, but they seem to work ok, to me. The border is so crowded that it was a job to get in to find a better view. For me, heleniums are one of the best border perennials going, though I don't think they entirely like the stony clay they're in here. Maybe this autumn we'll lift them and try to open up the soil a bit before replanting.
