The First Supermodel

Although its hard to tell thanks to the terrible quality of the photograph, the woman in the above picture is Twiggy. Yes, THE Twiggy.

As part of Aberdeen's over 50 festival this week, the Belmont cinema hosted an event called "An Afternoon with Twiggy". When I first read about it I wasn't overly excited as I assumed the iconic supermodel wouldn't actually be attending. After further research however, I discovered that not only would she be making an appearance but she would be doing a Q and A with the audience too!

As you can imagine the event was a big success and completely sold out. First they screened a documentary about the model made in America a few years ago. I didn't catch the name of it, but it's worth looking up. It was very funny and a great insight into the developments in the fashion industry through the 60's and 70's.

Then Twiggy came down and did an interview with the manager that had arranged the event then opened questions to the audience. I managed to bag a front row seat and I have to say I was a little star struck. She was funny, friendly and chatty and really engaged with the audience. So much so that she actually ran over.

The model divulged her beauty secrets, the highs and lows of her incredible career, who really cut 'The crop' (not Vidal Sassoon) and the joys of being a mother.

The event then ended with a screening of Twiggy's first film 'The Boyfriend'- both insane and hysterical. It definitely requires a second viewing though as the play within a play structure that moves between reality and dreams was rather hard to follow.

So needless to say the whole event was BRILLIANT. The best £8 I've spent in a long time. Meeting the woman that sparked the modern fashion industry into being (and rescued M&S!) was truly inspiring. An icon of fashion, Twiggy is not simply the worlds first supermodel, she's surely the greatest too.
