Selfies from the Brink

Pars pro toto

It was raining when we went out last night to distribute soup, clothes and blankets to the homeless. There are about 20 regulars who spend their nights outside in the streets around the farmer's market. I am not posting any faces because we didn't really get to know any of them. Most of them were visibly under the influence of alcohol and other drugs - and there were definitely too many of us. Lots and lots of young people standing around with nothing useful to do. We need to organize this a bit better when we'll visit them again next week. If you want to have some meaningful conversation and hear their stories, to know what their more urgent needs are and how they want us to help them, you need more intimacy. Not everybody wants to share their story with 20 or more people.
On the other hand, it was beautiful to see how many young people are willing to help. Projeto Amar  is a very young organization built by young people with great ideas and a lot of energy and disposition. All they need now is a bit of experience and social know-how to really have an impact on our town.
