Meanwhile, at the coast..

What lies beneath......

......apparently there's a coal seam down there if I dig deep enough.......

I was doing a bit of local history research yesterday (trying to find the site of the old Whitley Colliery, closed in the 1880's because it was unprofitable) and I was delighted to find that the British Geological Survey has hi-res digitised scans of their original (hand colour-washed!) solid and drift maps on their online maps portal alongside more recent ones.....mind you, it has to be said, geology doesn't change that much.....oh, and by the way, the old ones are WAY prettier ;-) Finding them brought back some happy memories of my cartographic days with the Department of the Environment......we had a full set covering the Northern Region, and every one a masterpiece in it's own way.
