Wolds Way Day 6: Staxton to Filey

We're there!

The day began well with Stephanie's fluffy pancakes covered in yoghurt, fruit compote and honey - to die for!

The highlight of today was watching three hares running across a field below us. We knocked a couple of miles off today's walk because it was another long one and the first part was going to be tough walking again, and we were tired and it was going to rain. Enough excuses?!

So Phil the Philosopher taxi driver, as opposed to Barry the Beekeeper taxi driver, dropped us on the footpath ten miles out at Staxton. The mizzle began within the first half an hour's walking so it was on with cagoules and feeling sticky. It was very different walking today, past the Staxton Wold RAF listening station to begin with and then steep descents and ascents of Lang Dale, Raven Dale and Camp Dale till we reached the very soggy woodland and long grass of Stocking Dale

Once we had crossed the busy main road we were on the descent towards Muston. The guide book told us there would be food and drink at The Ship Inn, just the right timing for lunch, but it was closed! So we sat on a bench in the rain and munched our cereal bars and drank our water before the last couple of miles in to Filey.

Through the town, down the hill to the front and along to Church Ravine, wot no finish stone?! We had a closer read of the confusing directions to discover that the finish was on Filey Brigg! So it was back up the cliff and along the top in search of the stone, hooray! So here we are, kindly blipped by a passing walker.

We were ready for a cuppa by this time and headed over to the Country Park Cafe to find that we had wet bottoms from sitting on the stone and that two school parties had arrived before us. It was like a reenactment of Our Day Out! We collapsed in to a couple of seats and waited for them all to get their ice creams before ordering some lunch.

Chris, the lovely BnB chap, recommended Bella Italia for our evening meal, good choice, and now we are watching the tennis and chilling before home tomorrow.
