Soaring

I took Daughter back to the airport today  - it was touch and go whether the flights would be cancelled with this wintry storm racing up the country. She still hasn't got home to Napier and is currently on hold in Wellington.

On the way home from Nelson I stopped at the Marina hoping for a wide angle shot to show the new snow on the mountains - but wide angle,  they looked so distant, the snow could barely be seen.

I stood for a while fascinated, watching the gulls soaring in the gusty wind. The gull in the blip was flying at head height just in front of me. It was kept stationary as we both faced into the strong wind and it was fascinating to see how the wings were used to maintain height and direction without any forward motion.

Daughter  has just texted to say that her flight has been cancelled. What a horrible journey for her - she is not a keen flyer at the best of times.
