Waffles for tea?

We have discovered that, if you get to Lakeland before 9.30am, you have the place to yourself and you can get a most delicious breakfast. Then you tend to spend a lot of money on ‘very useful’ things – we did need the pans; we did not need the waffle maker, but we will have a lot of fun with it.

We then made our way back, noticing the steady stream of traffic heading in the opposite direction towards Windermere. Surely it was unlikely that there would be any room to park by then.

Decided to return by the A6, as it was such a lovely day and we were tempted into Kendal Caravans, where we bought a beloved static many years ago. We had it parked near Greystoke and spent a lot of time there. Then, when we moved here, it had to go. Now we are just thinking . . .

We tore ourselves away and stopped in the Borrowdale Valley for a wander – well I wandered, Gordon climbed.

This is the bridge that takes the A6 over the Borrow Beck. I assumed it was High Borrow Bridge, as this is what the area is called, but a look at the map showed this was wrong. High Borrow Bridge is a very old pack-horse type bridge just a little further down the river. The old road used to go that way. In the 1820’s the Turnpike road was built (which is now the A6) and this bridge was built to go over the river. It is called Huck’s Bridge, named after the First Toll Keeper – Gerrard Huck. And the hill, down which vehicles go at a tremendously fast speed, is called Huck’s Brow.
