European Adventure Day 18: Budapest

Up early for a run along the Danube. Took this photo (almost identical shot to five years ago). Sobering.

Shoes on the Danube Promenade, a memorial by sculptor Gyular Pauer from 2005 shows 60 sets of shoes by the riverbank. These symbolise the many people shot by the Arrow Cross militia during the second world war. The bodies then fell into the river. Shoes were precious and were removed beforehand.

This was incredibly moving to see again, particularly the little pairs of boots belonging to children.

Breakfast at a lovely outdoor cafe then pouring with rain - sheltered in the Basilica of St Stephen's and had a brief look at his mummified hand! Bus over to Buda and a walk round including the Fisherman's Bastion and other beautiful buildings.

Tea out, sitting next to a chap from Largs who now lives in Budapest.
