Rockspring BVM

The description in the Archaeological Inventory, my Bible, had been very sparse for this well and nothing prepared us for it. A long bumpy boreen down to it, a ferocious looking boxer which came half way (dog!) and a farmyard with a small house which we couldn't be sure whether it was occupied or not. I knocked just in case. The well was huge, set inside what can only be described as a grove - tall, trees encircling and embracing.  A rack of jaunty cups was nailed to a tree, just above the picture of the Sacred Heart. The most fabulous bit was the  illuminated shrine to the BVM, shining away in the shadows. Ancient statues lurked here and there and the whole place just oozed atmosphere and mystery. Very different to yesterday's well.
