Hoverflies

There are 281 species of Hoverflies in Britain and Ireland.
This morning we went on a Hoverfly hunt organised by our Natural History Society and led by an expert.
They are not wasps or bees and they do not sting but they are very good at disguising themselves to deceive predators.

The main photo is a male Leuczona lucorum which has evolved to mimic a bee.
The two extras are, I believe, Eristalis horticola and Eristalis arbustorum.
Only a handful have common names but the include the Pied Hoverfly which I blipped a few days ago.

A most enjoyable morning.
