Small Heath

The first one I have seen so far this year.

Not having seen any so far, I visited a location where I have always seen them in the past but the weather wasn't favourable. Frequent very heavy showers of rain with bright interludes.

The only butterflies that were flying were green-veined whites (there are so many of them about this year).

I spotted this one deep amongst the grasses. Fortunately, it was so reluctant to fly that I was able to part the grass stems and push the lens within a few centimetres of it. (wide angle, macro setting, superzoom camera Canon SX 60).

As I left, it was still unmoved.
