At twenty-two, Lauretta’Reye Austin is already a seasoned protester, active with the group called Don’t Shoot Portland since she was nineteen. I posted a photo of her taken during the Quanice Hayes funeral in March. Today she was the keynote speaker at Don’t Shoot’s event marking the third anniversary of the killing of Michael Brown by police in Ferguson, Missouri. That’s hiphop artist Glenn Waco listening attentively to her description of her experiences of misogyny and discrimination and her passion for social justice activism. The other speakers on the panel were Teressa Raiford and Red Hamilton. All four are local treasures to the social justice community in Portland.
