Las Vegas: American Pie

The first leg of my trip found us in Las Vegas, Nevada.  What a night!

The Freemont Experience is just that.  It has to be seen to be believed.  I'm told it's the old downtown, the part of town that had fallen into sort of disarray.  Off the strip. It has been totally renovated and is now a real attraction. It's a long strip of smaller casinos but what makes it unique is the ceiling.  It's a giant Univision projection screen.  The largest in the world - the entire length of the street, which is closed to traffic.

At 7 pm, the production on the screen was an alien landing on earth and the battle that ensued.

The feature attraction was at 8pm.  Don McLean's American Pie.  (One of my all-time favorites!)

Imagine all of the images that were shown up there.  Charles Manson,  Martin Luther King, Jr.  JFK, Volkswagon Love Van, images of Vietnam War protests, Janis Joplin, the moon shot, clippings of the infamous Buddy Holly plane crash, Elvis,  Poodle skirts, Castro, psychedelic flowers and images...all flashing at warp speed.  I took 130 shots in eight minutes.

It was mind bending.  All set to that song.

I keep singing, bye, bye, Miss American Pie.  Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry.  But good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye and this will be the day that I die.

On to Zion National Park in Utah in the morning.
