Milestone

This milestone, recently re-erected, we pass frequently but today we stopped at the nearby lay-by, at a time when there was little traffic, for a closer look.

There is no discernible lettering, (although it may once have said 'Edinburgh 5 miles', according to the old map) but, more interestingly, on the top it now bears an Ordnance Survey bench mark and brass stud (see extra). Strangely, the map also notes a bench mark a few yards further south, on the other side of the road, which is closer than is usual.

Noting from Google Streetview that before re-erection the stone was almost buried, I imagine that the nasty bash on the top left was caused by a mowing machine.
