A Butterfly!

The first butterfly of the season, even though it is still winter. All it took was three mild, sunny days. The colours are deep, suggesting that it has just emerged from the chrysalis, but a large chunk is missing from its left hindwing. This gives us a glimpse of the rich red of the upper surface of the right hindwing.

The butterfly was quite small, and it did not come close. Fortunately I had the zoom lens on my camera.
