Brown Sugar Almond Custard Cake

Our Farmers' Market is in its fifth year of producing a series of Pop-Up Breakfasts as a fundraiser for its educational programs. These community events are held right in the market, the ingredients are all sourced from the vendors, and the menu is prepared by local chefs on site. Diners sit together at long communal tables. It's quite a production--the meal goes on for 2 to 3 hours and folks have ample opportunity to savor several courses of fantastic seasonal dishes. We shared our table today with a woman who has been farming here for sixteen years, two young doctors and their families, and two visitors from out of town--an interesting mix that fostered lively conversation as we enjoyed an excellent meal.
