Catherine Lacey: BoyStory

I want to be someone new

Reuben reading this Dr Seuss classic for the first time, and all the way through.

He's getting to be a handful and is relishing in flushing Callum's Spiderman underpants down the loo. Not funny. We've already used the gizmos to deeply unblock the drains. And he does in at the speed of light. I don't remember his legs ever moving so fast in any other activity. Blooming rascal.

We have Jenn to help with Reuben this afternoon since he's almost off night feeds and I'd much rather have the help in the day and I actually grabbed a quick longed for nap (that is until I was awoken by the sound of said pants begin flushed).

His teacher remarked how he's doing well in K, albeit he's a dreamer and enjoys diversion. He wrote his name nicely at school and when we arrived home, I had him write all the family names. And then we sat down and read this book. It's a lovely series of 6 Dr Seuss books and he'll be reading one per night. It suits Reuben well, beside himself, to stick to task. Getting him out of the house in the mornings has always been a struggle, previously for medical reasons, and now for plain old stubborn behaviour.

Callum is fantastically patient with Reuben and they're great foils to each other. Reuben loves nothing more than to make Callum happy and laugh and perhaps he sees that throwing his pants down the loo will actually make him laugh.

Callum is seeming like a little angel beside him. What a delightful age his 3 has been, just as Reuben's 3 was before him (sigh).

Boys hey.
