The Hoad, Ulverston

How I managed to get a blip today with such a blue sky is quite beyond me - wet most of the morning followed by intermittent heavy showers!

A hill overlooking Ulverston is not quite where you would expect to find a lighthouse - it is at least a mile and a half from the nearest water. The Hoad is a monument and not, nor ever was, a working coastal defence. It was built in 1850, is 100ft tall and is a scale replica of the Eddystone Lighthouse. It was built to commemorate Sir John Barrow, a founder member of the Royal Geographic Society, who was born in Ulverston.

This is the view from the Booth's car park.
