St Chads, Shrewsbury

“There are no wrong turnings. Only paths we had not known we were meant to walk.”
Guy Gavriel Kay, Tigana

A rest day from travelling today, so it's a relaxed wander around the streets of Shrewsbury.  And what a hidden gem of a place this is for me.  Often passed by, and through, but never stopped to look around - except once very briefly in between trains about 30 years ago.  Lovely medieval streets and alleyways, just the sort of place I like.  It seems to have retained something of its character, although there are a few 60's monstrosities around.  I loved the anecdote about Telford [the Engineer] warning the churchwardens that St Chads was in danger of collapse.  They ignored him, thinking he was trying to drum up a bit of business for himself - then soon after they reject his report the place collapses! Classic.
