Carpe Diem.

I regularly go to a local restaurant, Neill's Hill in East Belfast, which has undergone a refurbishment. Part of that involved the commissioning of a series of portraits which were based on real people in N. Ireland, chosen to represent our increasingly diverse society. This one struck me, because of the text, rather than the portrait. It reminds me that welcome and generosity are gifts which are worth giving. That spare seat at the table always available for the uninvited guest. That last drink, which allows you to listen more to that tale. But most imporatnt is that moment which is just waiting to be created. So often we are consumers of history, of events. This allows us to complain when "things" don't go our way. It is much more rewarding and, I would argue, more generous, to be a creator of history. Make that moment be memorable for "the other" whoever that is. Make that phone call you have been promising to make. Send that email or letter. Tell that friend or partner how much they mean to you. Carpe Diem!
