St Nininan's Mine

These hilltops will familiar from a distance to anyone who drives up the M90 past Kelty.

A project to develop the opencast mine as a major tourist site failed when the owners went into administration, losing the fund that was supposed to pay for land restoration. New owners did a limited restoration in a deal to extract the remaining coal; then mining ceased when it became uneconomic.

The site is not officially open to the public, but it is used by dog-walkers, and it's an easy walk up to the top of one of the hills. There is a sculpture up there, made from machinery parts, as well as a stone map of Europe.
