Carisbrooke Castle

After a mornings shopping in Newport I was ready for a good walk around the perimeter of Carisbrooke Castle which is now owned by English Heritage.

The castle has a long history dating from the Norman Conquest. It is known mainly for it's associations with Charles I who was briefly imprisoned there. it is said he tried to escape by climbing through the cell window but got stuck there until his jailors came to drag him back inside.

A family can enjoy a day at the castle exploring the walls and rooms and spectacular views across the island. Vert popular with children is the well house where a donkey in a wheel raises a bucket of water from the deep well.

The two people in the foreground were busy digging, whether planting or burying I did not care to investigate.
